Jehoshaphat the king of Judah did which was right before God so that God blessed him with honour and riches in abundance.
However, Ahab the king, who reigned in Israel, during the reign of Jehoshaphat in Judah, was found to be ungodly as he did not live right before God. Nevertheless, Jehoshaphat kept company with Ahab. As a result, Ahab was able to persuade Jehoshaphat to help him in the war against Ramothgilead. In this war, Ahab was killed. But God preserved Jehoshaphat as he sought the help of God when he was about to be killed in the battle.
(Refer 2 Chronicles Chapter 18 for the whole story)
However, the judgement came upon Jehoshaphat through the mouth of Jehu, the prophet of God. Look at the below passage of the Scripture.
2 Chronicles 19:2
And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD.
Helping and loving the ungodly was the SIN, Jehoshaphat the king of Judah had committed against God even though he helped a fellow Israelite. But this is a story in the Old Testament.
Do you think we, being in the New Testament are exempt from this sin as Jesus said, "Love your neighbour"?
Before we come to a conclusion of this nature, we must check who are really ungodly for us in the New Testament. You might think only murderers, thieves and fornicators and people of similar sins are ungodly. Truly they are ungodly and they have no part in the Kingdom of God unless they repent. Look at what Jesus said to us in the New Testament, concerning the ungodly.
(Mar 6:11)
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
According to the above scripture, whoever rejects you for the testimony you carry with you about the salvation Jesus has brought to the man kind are ALSO considered to be ungodly.
However, the Word of God never allows us to hate the ungodly even though we cannot love them. All we can do for them is to pray for their salvation. But this does not mean that we can move with them or find their counsel in our matters in this world or engage with them in their matters in this world.
Unfortunately, this is the point many Christians have missed. As a result, today the devil has easily attacked many children of God through the kind of ungodly people discussed above.
