Genesis 15:7
7 And he said unto him, I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
God promised Abraham that the land of Canaan would be given to him as an Inheritance.
As Abraham had been brought to Canaan from Ur, when God made the above
promise to him, Abraham was under the impression that he would inherit
Canaan during his life time. The question in Genesis 15:8, which Abraham put before God reveals this fact.
Genesis 15:8
8 And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?
Nevertheless, God did not give Canaan as an inheritance to Abraham
during his life time. Thus, God said to Abraham that Abraham would not
inherit Canaan, but he would die in a good old age. Instead, his
descendants (his seed) would inherit Canaan after they served a nation
in a foreign land for 400 years.
Genesis 15:13-15
13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
Why did God not give the land of Canaan to Abraham during his life time?
Why did God take 400 years to fulfill the promise given to Abraham?
If God could multiply Abraham's seed in the land of Egypt as slaves and
then bring them out of Egypt by smiting the king of Egypt and his
people, why couldn't God do a similar thing keeping them in Canaan itself
as Abraham was already dwelling in Canaan by the time he died?
Different
preachers of the Word of God give different answers to the above two
questions. I have quoted below some of the answers given by different
Christian denominations that I have heard with my own ears.
Some say God wanted to test the children of Israel - Abraham's seed,
during their journey through the wilderness before they were brought to
Canaan. However, the below scripture reveals the true reason why God
led them through the wilderness.
Exodus 13:17-18
17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt: 18 But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.
Some
say that God made the children of Israel slaves as they could be
multiplied fast when they remained as slaves. But the below scripture
proves that even before they were made slaves by Pharaoh, their nation
had already multiplied in number.
Exodus 1:6-7
6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
The
majority say that God wanted to multiply Abraham's seed in a foreign
land before God would bring them to Canaan as the land was big enough.
However the below scripture reveals that the number of Children of
Israel was not even enough to fill the land of Canaan even when they
were coming from Egypt to the land after 430 years.
Exodus 23:29-30
29 I
will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land
become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee. 30 By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land.
Well, if we read the Word of God carefully,
we can find the answer to the above questions right from the Word of
God without going into any assumptions. Look at the reason God Himself
gave to Abraham:
Genesis 15:16
16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
God decided to select the land of Canaan to be given to Abraham as an inheritance since the land was full of inequities
by the 7 nations dwelt in it. However the inequities of one nation was
not full for God to bring judgement upon them. Yes, that nation was
Amorites according to the above scripture. Amorites were one of the 7 nations that had occupied the Land of Canaan by then. God knew Amorites would take 400 years to be full in their inequities to receive the judgement of God.
This incident shows a divine nature of God. God never brings judgement upon any man, until his inequities are full according to God's measurement.
Today, we see many wicked people prosper in their lives by their wicked schemes.
As the Children of God, we sometimes wonder how they would succeed
without being punished by God. We are surprised to see them going unpunished because we see their inequities are full according to our measurements.
However, the reason why they still continue in their wickedness is that their inequities are not full according to God's measurement. Remember! None of the wicked shall go unpunished according to the Word of God.
Proverbs 11:21
Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished...
Even
though the wicked are left alone until their inequities become full,
God never leaves His Children to flourish in their sinful ways as God loves them. God always chastises those whom God loves whenever they go out of the track lest they become full in their inequities causing God to bring the disastrous judgement upon them.
